  1.                  RIGID GAS PERMEABLE (RGP) LENSES

  3.                 Shortly after the introduction of hydrogel 
  4.                 lenses, rigid gas permeable (RGP) lens 
  5.                 materials were developed.  The oxygen 
  6.                 permeability was achieved by adding 
  7.                 silicone to PMMA.  The increased oxygen 
  8.                 permeability significantly decreased the 
  9.                 corneal edema.

  11.                 Adding the silicone decreased the surface       
  12.                 wettability, that is the tear film would not  
  13.                 always form on the lens causing vision 
  14.                 problems, deposit formation of the lenses, 
  15.                 and decreased comfort.  Other compounds 
  16.                 were added to minimize these problems 
  17.                 including methylacrylic acid, HEMA and fluorine.

  19. Today the vast majority of rigid lenses fitted are gas permeable due to the advantages with respect to corneal health.
